It was a hot and humid day of July, when we were amidst discussion with our Godawan Mitra's about the family life and livelihood options. Mr. Urs Khan, a proud Godawan savior and resident of village Nimba of Desert National Park-Sanctuary, is working with The ERDS Foundation as Godawan Mitra since July 2020. His family owns 14 mix breed local chicken varieties along with 15+ goats and medium sized rain fed farms in remote part of Desert National Park-Sanctuary. This is his entire economic wealth for survival. The ERDS Foundation has provided a Kadaknath male fowl to him for breed improvement as well as to see the survival of this indigenous variety in such a harsh climatic condition.
This male chicken was named SULTAN by his kids and now taken care of well by the family. Since last few years, Kadaknath Chicken farming is being promoted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jaisalmer and results are quite promising to support a small livelihood with minimal investment. Currently more then 10 such backyard poultry farms are being managed by locals in Jaisalmer by themselves. An estimation by KVK research team, that within 3 month, one chicken can fetch Rs. 1000/- in local market. The ERDS Foundation is working and having dialogue with many such marginal people to bring them into this program. Any type of sustainable livelihood support to the locals, boosting their morale and ultimately making them saviors of Godawan.
